What Is PAP Teeth Whitening — And Is It Better Than Peroxide?

PAP-X peroxide-free whitening strips — Pro White

PAP stands for Phthalimidoperoxycaproic Acid, a peroxide-free whitening agent that has taken the oral care world by storm. It is the active ingredient in the entire Pro White PAP-X™ range, and it works very differently to traditional hydrogen peroxide. Here is everything you need to know.

How Does PAP Work?

Traditional whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide penetrate the tooth and break down the chromophores (colour molecules) inside the enamel. This is effective but the peroxide molecules also interact with nerve endings inside the tooth, causing the sensitivity many people associate with whitening.

PAP works differently. It oxidises stains through a surface-level chemical reaction rather than deep penetration. The active molecule is larger and does not reach the nerve, which is why PAP-based whitening produces zero sensitivity even with repeated use.

What's in the PAP-X Formula?

  • Phthalimidoperoxycaproic Acid (PAP): the primary whitening agent that oxidises surface stains
  • Hydroxyapatite (HAp): remineralises and strengthens enamel, repairing microscopic damage
  • Potassium Citrate: blocks sensitivity signals, making the formula safe for sensitive teeth

💡 Clinical studies show PAP delivers comparable whitening to hydrogen peroxide, with significantly lower sensitivity scores in every trial.

Is PAP as Effective as Peroxide?

For everyday staining from coffee, tea, wine, and food, PAP-X delivers visible results from the first treatment. For deep intrinsic staining caused by ageing or medication, your dentist can advise. For the vast majority of whitening goals, PAP-X performs equally well without the drawbacks.
